We can't really justify buying a bull but would like to produce calves at some point. We live in an area with a lot of small farms but very few commercial type farms. My question is do most vets that make farm calls do artificial insemination? Or do we need to just try to find someone that would loan us a bull?

I had REALLY planned on either learning or getting someone to AI my cows but this year my only cow that's age wise ready to breed found a way out of our fence to the angus bull nextdoor and she spent 2 days before she came to the gate for me to let her in :) , I like a neighbor bull next door !!! I wasnt about to go into neighbors pasture to get my cow from that bull but he left her alone at the gate and went back to his own cows. I hope and plan on using the neighbors bull again for my other cows early next fall breeding but this time I will have a HOT June calf ,slow pasture grass for cows and feed and hay all winter but I am not complaining ! A neighbor bull is best as I really looked for a vet that would AI a cow and the cost is about $150.00 plus semen cost but neighbor is much cheaper and much easier to find.
