How do I start getting into the Backgrounding operation? I don't want a lot of head to start with just 10 or so. Is it still possible to get into this with this few of head? Or should I just breed them or feed them out?

Late response sorry. You can and should background your calves if you have facilities and time for it. Wether 10 calves or 1,000 calves backgrounding is the the thing to do.

I background 400 calves starting in October-ish of every year. (Spring calf opporation, sell as feeder calves)

I do all of my backgrounding in a dry lot situation. Roughly 35-40 acres for 400 head. To background will require seeing the calves 7 days a week. With 10 it shouldn't take long, but will still require someone to feed grain, hay, ect. I background for about 100 days and sell in January-ish.

I believe backgrounding will almost always pay-off. Even if you just background for 45-60 days.
