Drinking during illness

I'd like to ask please, when a cow gets ill, does it tend to drink less than normal? More than normal?
I'm asking as I'd like to know if by monitoring the daily water consumption of a cow, I could tell if it's sick or not.
Therefore I'd like to ask how the water consumption of a cow changes when its ill, if it changes at all.
