Does anyone have a fix for prairie dogs? They seem to be winning in their quest to destroy the native grass pastures in the Oklahoma Panhandle including my place. The best and most cost effective is bubonic plague but I don't know anybody that has any extra right at the moment. Anybody got any advice?
I second that! We have several long standing relationships with multiple ranches who gladly have us back yearly to cut down on their varmint problems. Mostly ground squirrels in our area but if we were closer we'd gladly help out. To us it's vacation. To the land owners it's a huge help. Just pick your hunters wisely. Not all hunters are safety conscious and leave a mess. Maybe you can ask other ranches and see who is around. We hunt for free but we fix fences when we see broken wires and generally come bearing edible/drinkable goodies They usually are calling before we're ready to hunt. Lol!
Take some sweet potatoes and regular potatoes ( the sweet pots are best btw ) gotta slice em and cut em up some: soak em potatoes in old style anti freeze for bout 3 to 4 days. ( we use the old style hog troughs to soak em in, And a lot of times soak em for 5 to 7 days...the cut in 1/2 propane cylinders ). Spread em out in an old style manure spreader and just spread em Right over the prairie dog town. works Great...just don't tell anyone.
The hunting is fun and that's fine but it doesn't start control, much less exterminate. Sometimes it seems anything works and then other times nothing does. Thanks Mark, but you're right, I know better than to try that. SSS
I have a similar problems on my ranch but I don't live there full time yet so I just shoot as many as I can when im there.
