I've been raising cattle for 11 years but so far I've only had cows, heifers, and calves. (not counting the bull my parents had when I was a kid)

However, lately I've had more time on my hands and I'm thinking about getting a bull. Any thoughts or tips would be a great help. Thanks!

Health of the bull is first and foremost. If using for breeding genetics is an area you want to know about. Keeping the bull for just one breeding season, and than look to either sell off or trade bulls with another rancher. This will stop inbreeding of the cattle

I want to use AI on some of my cows, though I have a bull on the farm who is actively working. If I use AI in a few select cows, will having the bull around have a negative impact on the insemination success rate?
